Young voices were raised to help lift spirits and bring comfort to people living in a Croydon nursing home.
The choir members of Chestnut Park Primary School, a member of the GLF Schools Multi Academy Trust, made the short trip to Albany Lodge Nursing Home for a heartwarming experience across all the generations.
“We held a choir club every Tuesday for eight weeks and from the very first session the children knew they would be working towards this special performance which gave them a real sense of focus and motivation. We practised techniques, worked on confidence and discussed the importance of performance etiquette and connecting with an audience,” said Michelle Staples, Associate Deputy Headteacher at our school.
And the residents were delighted with the visit - especially when the children sang ‘happy birthday’ to the wife of one, and to a resident also celebrating his special day.
“Community and character building are at the heart of what we do. As a school, we regularly hold collective worship sessions, where children are encouraged to reflect on values, share thoughts and explore different worldviews. Events like the choir visit are an extension of this ethos, giving children hands-on opportunities to connect with the wider community and make a positive impact,” said Miss Staples.
The children were told that some of the residents may not have visitors or get to meet young people so their presence and music would be meaningful.
“The children sang two uplifting songs, ‘Give it all You’ve Got’ and ‘This Little Light of Mine,’ and both were chosen because they carry positive, empowering messages and are accessible for children to sing with joy and confidence,” added Miss Staples.
“The residents’ reactions were heartwarming, there were smiles and claps from both staff and residents.”
The school has a range of initiatives ongoing to develop connections with the local community. Regular coffee mornings are held to foster family and school partnerships. There are also plans to strengthen the link with Albany Lodge with future events and visits.
“Experiences like this benefit everyone involved, they help students grow, strengthen our ties to the community and bring joy to people who might otherwise feel isolated. We’re excited to explore further opportunities for our school choir and other student groups to engage in meaningful community outreach.”
